The History of Clay Café in the City
The Beginning of a Creative Odyssey
Four years ago, Clay Café in the City opened its doors in Wandel Street, Gardens. With a vision to provide a space where artistry and expression could flourish, a space where adults could enjoy painting. From humble beginnings, two staff, no kitchen and four tables – the city branch has grown into the perfect creative hub for adults!
The idea to start the city branch came from an interest in setting up a creative space for adults to relax, play and unwind. Jade & Mike took the fundamentals of the original concept (founded by Chris Irving) and removed key elements to see if the space would work in a city-scape environment.
The tiny, 20 seater in Gardens was a passion project, a ‘pop up’ space so to speak, to test the waters. This was done by ‘removing’ the big playground and replacing it with soft lighting and calm music. The city branch also introduced opening late and serving a tapas style menu that included wine… and kept all the bells and whistles of the original concept. Clay Café in the City was opened in October of 2019.
The founders, Jade & Mike Bradburn, envisioned a place where work colleagues, friends, date nights, birthdays and events would bring people together to paint, create and share memorable experiences. From the very beginning, their passion for art and community fuelled the café’s growth.
Unleashing Artistic Expression
Over the past four years, Clay Café in the City has become synonymous with artistic expression. It has served as a canvas for the city’s imagination, where families, friends, and solo artists alike have gathered to bring their artistic visions to life. From colourful mugs and delicate figurines to intricate pottery masterpieces, the café has witnessed it all.
A Hub for Celebrations
Clay Café in the City isn’t just a place to create; it’s a place to celebrate life’s memorable moments. From birthdays and anniversaries to bridal showers and team-building events, the café has been a backdrop for countless joyous occasions. The tradition of leaving a piece of oneself in every creation has become a cherished ritual for many.
Community & Connection
One of Clay Café in the City’s proudest achievements is the sense of community it has fostered. Local artists have found a platform to showcase their talents, and friendships have blossomed over shared artistic endeavors. The café has also partnered with schools and nonprofit organisations to bring the joy of art to underprivileged communities.
As it embarks on its fifth year, we look forward to witnessing even more artistry, friendship, and memorable moments. Happy birthday Clay Café in the City! Here’s to many more years of making memories, one brushstroke at a time.
